Frequently asked questions (and not so frequently asked questions)
Do you offer consultations?
Yes, I offer obligation-free insight sessions via telehealth. This gives you a great opportunity to see if we'd be a good fit and test out the telehealth format if that's something you're curious about too.

What do you use for telehealth?

I use Google Meet and give each client a single, dedicated meeting link for their sessions. This means you don't need to find and use a new link each time.
There's no need to download any special software to use Google Meet - all you need to do is click on the link and make sure you've given permissions for video and microphone access, then hit "Join the Session" when you're ready.
You'll also need privacy (some clients do their sessions from a parked vehicle), a suitable device and a stable internet connection to ensure your session is successful and feels safe.

What if I'm late for my session?
Life can be unpredictable, and that's ok. Just get in touch if you're running late (the easiest option is SMS reply to your reminder message) so I know to keep the call active for you.

Generally, if we don't hear from a client and they haven't connected to the call within 10 mins, it's assumed that they're a no-show and this will attract a cancellation fee.

Note that late arrival will shorten the length of your session.

I'm neurodivergent and would like (insert request) to be accommodated during my session, would that be ok?

Yes! I completely welcome you as a neurodivergent with unique needs. If you need to stim, fidget or walk into another room to calm your nervous system. That's fine! If you'd like to draw, turn up in a fluffy bathrobe, or whatever during your session, you won't be judged. It won't be annoying. It won't be viewed as an inconvenience.

As an ADHDer with all the sensory things, I totally get you. And it's super easy for me to be flexible.
Just know that your session is a time for you. And that means you are 100% allowed to incorporate the things that will make you feel comfortable, safe and secure. So please, take this as a license to be weird and wonderful if that's your jam.

I've been in an awful relationship but I've done some bad stuff too. I need help...but I'm afraid. Will I be judged?
If you've been in an abusive relationship for any length of time, sooner or later you're likely to act in ways which are uncharacteristic and could be characterised as abusive.
Reactive abuse is where someone who has been abused reacts, instead of responds, to their abuser.
As an example, have a look back at the earlier stages of the abuse. If you recognise a pattern for yourself of responding maturely, trying to work with the other person, trying to empathise, understand, validate and support them, and doing this many times before finally losing your cool and throwing an insult back (after being on the receiving end of countless insults) - this is reactive abuse.
And no, you won't be judged. I'm here to support you.
I"m also here to support anyone who's been abusive in the past and is genuinely seeking support to reduce or eliminate harmful behaviour.

I have a mental health treatment plan (MHTP) - can I use that for my sessions?
Registered counsellors aren't currently able to provide Medicare rebates for MHTPs.
You could seek out a suitable psychologist. The drawback is most psychologists have extensive wait times due to current industry shortages, and the gap payment is usually still quite high. Sometimes you'll find it much more cost effective, and a great relief, to receive immediate support from a counsellor.

Do I need a referral for counselling?

No, you don't need to get a doctor's referral or take any additional steps to obtain counselling. You're free to simply book a session when you're ready.

I'm experiencing domestic violence and I need to break my lease/sort out my visa situation - can you help?
Breaking a lease
It varies from state to state, but usually you'll need a registered medical practitioner or registered social worker to assist with this. Counsellors who work for NGOs in the area of victims rights and support are sometimes allowed to make declarations on your behalf.
Visas
It's important to check with the Department of Home Affairs for the latest information. Currently, they do not accept evidence from registered counsellors except those who specifically work in the area of family counselling.
